Is it just me, or are we finding out that above all else, Alaskan politicians really like free houses? Fresh in the middle of Ted Stevens' corruption trial, new allegations are coming to light that the same firm that built the hockey rink that then-mayor Sarah Palin got erected in Wasilla (probably the only time I'll connect a variation of the word 'erect' with Sarah Palin) may have built her house for free.
I'm just going out on a limb here, but don't you fucking morons (and by that, I'm speaking directly to Sen. Ted Stevens and Gov. Sarah Palin) think that bribery, kickbacks, greasing the wheels, whatever you want to call it, should be a little easier to conceal than a fucking house? It's not like cash, or hookers, or even a dildo sharpener in Palin's case would be that hard to sweep under a rug or deposit in the drawer next to the bed, as it were.
Then again, try convincing either of these two rocket surgeons they even did anything wrong in the first place. Sure, the jury's still out on Stevens, so to speak, but what about Palin? She can't even figure out the basics of the national campaign trail, or the construction of a complete sentence, so her lack of grasp of Alaska's ethics laws seems hardly surprising at this point in time.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. So I've heard, and so I've been told. But in so far as Ted Stevens and Sarah Palin go, it may be one of the very few things in their respective careers- ignorance- that they have come by honestly.

McCain's search for comprehension
I wonder when the epiphany is going to strike...I truly wonder when that day between now and the first Tuesday of November arrives, and the light bulb fires up over John McCain's head, and the realization finally sets in.
"I couldn't have done a better job of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory if I was the 'B' fighter in a Don King pay-per-view main event."
Granted, that may not be what the Senator from Arizona has flash through his head verbatim, but it probably won't be that far from the truth. As the 2008 presidential election winds down, do you think McCain is starting to compile his mental laundry list of what went wrong? I mean, let's not kid ourselves here, we're talking about a guy who went from being a Republican candidate I would have potentially voted for in 2000 to just another poorly sewn-together Dubya knock-off...a flip-flopping, rambling, clueless man stuck firmly in the grasp of denial.
Was it hiring an all-star team of utter douchebags to run your campaign? Was it picking the original Desperate Housewife as your running mate? Was it briefly (or still, I can't keep track of my scorecard) running the dirtiest campaign of the televised political era? What will be the one thing McCain chalks up as the reason he finds himself sitting in whichever the hell house it will be on November 5, drinking Ovaltine and bottom shelf vodka and celebrating a second-place finish?
Was it letting his wife give stump speeches when she was not busy swiping recipes from every other website she could get her hands on? Was it his running mate setting back the cause of women in politics for decades to come? Was it the leading conservatives, from George Will to Bill Kristol to Kathleen Parker to even Newt friggin' Gingrich falling all over themselves to proclaim that, in fact, this shit is bananas? I guess we'll have to wait until November 5, cause if I tried to individually list all the possible causes, that's how long I'd be sitting here typing.

More of the mighty wind, this time from the Governor's mansion
I just read an article in the Courier-Journal, entitled Daniels seeks aid for 14 counties. According to the article, Clark and Harrison counties here in Indiana may get storm help, but it has already been reported in that very same publication that these two counties are already receiving assistance.
I guess Floyd County, where I live, which sits between Clark County and Harrison County, is so small the storm must have passed right over us! I guess my power was out for five and a half days because Duke Energy figured if those two counties did not have power, why should we?! Guess some little gremlin cut the three down to fall across the power lines, which is why we were told we didn't have any power.
Guess watching the wind bend the trees was just my imagination. Guess I had to throw a whole refrigerator full of food out was just my bad luck. Guess I sat in the dark just because I liked to.
Guess we finally knew how much we matter to our great state government, half-assed, when at all...

The ice isn't the only thing melting in Alaska...
Wow- 2008 has turned out to be a landmark year for Alaska politics. Governor Sarah Palin was found to have abused the power of her office and broken the public trust, notably the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. Senator Ted Stevens can only get other Republican politicians and former members of the Bush Administration to say "hey, he's a good guy!"
Don't know about the rest of you, but a politician is almost synonymous with several four-letter words, with liar being the nicest I'm willing to print!

Viral Video: The Daily Show's John Oliver on the 'Undecided' voters
from Dr. Thomas Keister, Managing Editor of BLOG!: Yeah, yeah, yeah...I'm willing to take the hit for being a Cubs fan. For the second straight year, the Cubbies absolutely pooched it in the playoffs, and this time as the alleged best team in the National League. At least I know how I'm voting. Baseball choke artists aside, this was hysterical and goes to show that while Britain has went screaming off the rails in recent years, at least their humorists are still among the finest in the world. Well done, John...

At Ford, quality may be job #1, but shouldn't common sense be in the top 3 somewhere?
Let me see if I got this straight...according to Alan Mulally, chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company, the economic slump will be "longer and deeper" than most people previously thought. Thank you, Captain Obvious. Perhaps it was the $110 billion in asinine "sweeteners" tacked on to the bailout plan's second take, which surprised absolutely no one, as did the fact the second bailout passed with little of the hemming and hawing that punctuated the first attempt.
Never mind the idea that a guy making $26 million a year to drive a major (and formerly venerable) corporation into the ground like a tent stake is talking about economic slumps. I would say Mulally has taken pages from the Carly Fiorina playbook of business management, but something tells me it was just the playbook's lone page, which Fiorina didn't even bother coloring in completely.
Mulally didn't stop there while making remarks at the Paris auto show, making the non-statement that what makes it harder for everybody (the auto industry) is slowing global auto sales, and confirming that bankruptcy is not an option on the table for Ford. First, consistently sticking with vehicles featuring poor gas mileage performance, and that includes the so-called "crossovers" is what has led to, in large part, slowing global auto sales. Secondly, why would bankruptcy be an option? The guy in a long free-fall isn't so much worried about the view on the way down, just at what point rock bottom's going to arrive.

McCain keeps swinging...although he struck out three weeks ago
Some of my friends who are becoming politically interested (which, for some of them, only happens every four years, lamentably) have been asking me if Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, has suffered a stroke of some sort. Even my co-host on Probably Uncalled For was wondering the same thing after seeing clips of a recent speech where McCain's at-times awkward body language suggested that perhaps some sort of neurological damage had occurred.
Nope. As far as I am aware, Sen. McCain is perfectly healthy...at least physically. Mentally, the guy's a racehorse that should have been taken out back and shotgunned a half-dozen races ago.
After voting on the pork-laden Bailout II: The Sequel, and voting for it, McCain then assailed the bill itself, calling for President Bush to veto the bill, no matter what the circumstances were. When pressed by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough as to why the bill contained so many ludicrous earmarks, including those I mentioned on my show, for railroads, auto racing tracks, and Puerto Rican rum production, McCain's answer was to the effect of "that's how the system works, and that's why it needs to be changed."
Damn. That's the equivalent of repeatedly pissing on the floor, and saying that is why a mop is needed. For someone who is attempting to suddenly recast himself as a candidate all about the change, playing the same old game, and then asking for another at-bat the day after the last pitch has been thrown, serves as a perfect example of a guy who really needs to be nudged into hanging up the spikes, as it has become more than apparent that Sen. John McCain isn't even sure which way to run around the bases anymore.

Thoughts on Episode 68
Wonder how many people are hanging on every minute of the bailout drama, now that details are emerging in which our Senate apparently wants to bail out railroads and Puerto Rican rum production right along with a mess of other shit that has absolutely nothing to do with the economic woes in the first place. Like I said on the show, I doubt the railroads are hurting, last time I checked, NASCAR is doing just fine, and come on, man...fucking wool research? Like there isn't anything we don't fucking know about wool by the year 2008? Key to remember here is the fact that Sen. John McCain (the guy who thinks our economic fundamental are rock damn strong) voted for the bill, although not even twenty-four hours later, he is hounding G-Dub to veto the bill, no matter what. No matter what, damnit! What the hell, is McCain already regretting his latest one-night stand after a party at the pork bar?

So, according to an "anonymous insider" at the American Red Cross, the Department of Defense made 5,000 black men disappear into the Louisiana swamps after a single bullet to the head, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina? This is the assertion of Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party presidential candidate. You may now have a moment at home with which to facepalm. If you needed any further proof that McKinney is batshit crazy, maybe you'll get lucky and she'll wind up marrying Bobby Brown. Oh, what a reality show that would be...
xxx
Being found dead in your truck in a Wal Mart parking lot after huffing seven and a half cans of fucking compressed air (also known as keyboard cleaner)? Congratulations, Julie Miller of Franklin, North Carolina- you just got the seat right up front on the short bus to Heaven. Hope you kept your hands inside the bus on the trip, dumbass.
xxx
Using a religious defense to try and dodge charges including running a bordello? (that's whorehouse for those of you who do not own a dictionary or a word a day calendar from the Hustler Superstore) Damn near brilliant, but still a swing and a miss...A for effort, though.
xxx
Now that the police in Britain have managed to confiscate (and subsequently lose) an elderly man's cane, which they deemed an "offensive weapon," maybe on next week's show, we'll find the tale of cops in the UK snagging an old lady's walker as a weapon of mass destruction. I know how you feel...you wanna look at me like I'm crazy, but the more you examine that situation, the more you find yourself feeling I'll probably be right sooner than later.
xxx
Which is more disturbing: the concept of Kelly Osbourne having drunken, unprotected sex, or Ellen DeGeneres hawking beauty products, in yet another semi-ironic celebrity example of hypocrisy? Yeah, I hear ya...tough call. Better yet, rather not think about either, come to think of it...
xxx
I would love to make an outrageous statement for charity, like for every picture our readers or listeners send of them with a stolen mile marker 66.6 sign from New Jersey, I'd donate some $ to the March of Dimes or something, but let's not kid ourselves here, people. I host an Internet radio show. How much do you think that is really paying right now? Yeah...but if you do manage to steal the signs, helpfully located at:
- The Garden State Parkway, Barnegat
- The New Jersey Turnpike, East Windor
Then send the damn pics, anyway...we'll post them on here, everybody will get a chuckle, and if you get pinched, as an added bonus, we'll slap your mugshot up here if they make it on The Smoking Gun's website. Good times.
